Kael is the game master of Overlayed Echoes and the friend who built the game the others step into — eleven months of his life poured into a campaign he drew the maps for himself. The story's narrator, he's the second-quietest person in any room, the kind who carries a worn black notebook everywhere because writing his life down is the only way he's ever figured out how to be inside it.
He loves the four people at his table the way he can't quite say out loud, so he builds it instead — little gifts stitched into the code where he thinks they'll pass unseen. As the first session begins, he reaches for the interface with the countdown caught in his throat.
